We had our fun, but there are signs everything just might have been a flash in the pan. I mean, the unexpected resurgence of Pinoy young stars in many parts of the world. Kathniel. Jadine. Lizquen. We have posted the milestones of their fame all over the world in this blog (frankly, that was mainly what the blog was about). They became big in the Philippines, but fortunately, they had international appeal so off they clicked. It was fun while it lasted.
I won't debate the loveteam combinations in the Philippine setting. I have to admit I have no interest in the local dynamics. My interest sprang from my discovery that the 3 loveteams were creating inroads in many countries in different parts of the world. I scanned the blogospheres of each country to monitor their trajectories (that sprang from my love of places & languages). The only teleseryes I watched, I watched dubbed or subtitled online from a foreign TV station's website (I still have to watch one from my TV which I rarely use anyway).
What clicks in the Philippines doesn't necessarily click outside. Anybody who joined me in my journey & learned to scan the foreign pages would attest to the varying reactions to Philippine stars. The reaction to what I called the Big 3 was special compared to the reaction to other Pinoy stars. But it seems, all indications point to the fact that the Big 3 thing might just have been accidental. Why so?
Just look at the next-in-line loveteams. True, anybody can get lucky in the Philippine setting & I really don't care if a young loveteam is created to pair a cross-eyed garbage man with an obese high society girl, they can make it for all I care. But I would be disappointed if they don't elicit anymore internationally the popularity won by Kathniel, Lizquen or Jadine in saner times. And if you have been monitoring the comments in previous articles, there's a palpable fear that the future loveteams would be disappointments. I don't need to mention their names, not worth our time. And I fear, not worth the time of the foreign fans either. We won't be following hot young Pinoy loveteams anymore in foreign lands?
As one of the comments described it: Gabi ng Lagim... in Pinoy loveteam land.
I kinda agree.
DeleteIf they insist to be less interesting, so be it. The followers of this blog can look for other interesting things.
Two years lang.
Hanggang dito nalang ba tayo, end of the road?
Most famous Pinay actress si Marian.
DeleteCute loveteams
Marami yon.
ReplyDeleteBlaming the Masa is a escape goat and a convenient excuse by the networks and content producers for their inability to come up with better content. The masa consumed not only local contents but foreign contents too, which are more superior product that the ones produced locally. It's time the networks to stop blaming the masa and step up the plate and do a better job. We need to force them to improve their product.
DeleteStupid. Even the admin is being swayed by the comments from people in the comment area who tend to look at our foray into foreign countries in terms of korean's kdrama success. You need to look at our teleserye success in terms of our own and not in terms of someone else lense. BTW, it's not the love teams that made our teleseryes successful ovearseas. it's the appeal or the success of a particular teleserye or movie that will determine the popularity of our content, not the love teams.
ReplyDeleteThis is the Admin. If you read closely what I wrote, I believe the opposite of what you wrote. To be frank, I became a believer in the Big 3 LTs even without watching their teleseryes, I was swayed by the reaction of the foreign fans to them. I don't read local forums, I am not interested in the local reactions. This is not what this blog is about, you can read other blogs for that
DeleteI don't read local blog/forums except mine
DeleteWell, I have friends as support staff who read the local blogosphere, and we discuss
DeleteAs history backgrounder: It was not the teleseryes which started the popularity of the Big 3. It was the film Diary ng Panget which started it in the pirate sites followed by She's Dating The Gangster. Lizquen was the first Pinoy LT which gained popularity via teleserye (Forevermore).( It was at this stage when the Korean sabotage were noted btw)
DeleteThe teleseryes contributed to the popularity but there was something in the Big 3 that's why they were noticed & not the other Pinoy loveteams, including those whose films were shown in the pirate sites. The showing on free TV however increased the popularity of the LT's. So, what is that something that became a hit with the fans? What do you think is the percentage of looks in the process? What is the likelihood of a good teleserye turning a so-so looking LT into popular sensations like the Big 3 LT? Nil. Just look at the other Pinoy LT's which even the pirates didn't bother with. So with the future so-called girl-dog loveteams, most likely ignored certainly
Delete@Admin March 27, 2017 at 5:33 PM
DeleteSure the LT has a place in the popularizing of our shows overseas but LT are not the ones that solely determine if a show is a success or popular overseas. That would be wrong to think that. Our shows has had hits overseas before even without touting love teams. It's the Teleserye itself that determined that popularity or success of our teleseryes. GMA has been proving that and also other ABS shows not based on LT and that is the constant thing that is true from the past and moving forward. It's the teleserye itself that makes or breaks the success or the popularity of a show overseas.
@Anonymous March 27, 2017 at 6:23 PM
DeleteKathniel was already popular before Diary ng Panget. LizQuen became popular because of their teleserye Forevermore. Jadine became popular with Diary ng Panget yes that's true but they followed that with teleseryes with mix result. But before all of this, teleserye as already popular in other parts of the world and it was growing in popularity, it only happens that the two new LT are in the right place and in the right time to ride that surging popularity of teleserye overseas. CocoJul was also popular with Walang Hanggan thanks to teleserye. Too bad though their LT was disbanded.
You are all new in to these. Even the Admin is a newbie.
Delete6:53, 6:57, Erroneous info there, Kathniel was not popular before Diary ng Panget. Jadine was the first to be noticed in an international scale. Kathniel had pinpoint initial success like G2B in Vietnam but not as pervasive as the initial Jadine surge which started from Latin America to Russia & beyond. Kathniel was a latecomer in Central Asia for instance, just as JaDine is a latecomer in Africa. Many Pinoy actors have been popular spottily but not to the level of the Big 3 LT's (well, the popularity of Marian Rivera is another level altogether). You can confirm everything in the web, the time capsules of the events have been preserved there.
DeleteKathniel was already popular and on their way to being more popular with or without the success of Diary ng Panget. Kathniel, by way of Kathryn Bernardo's Mara Clara role has helped kathniel to rise even before that. Btw, IMO, Mara Clara has equalled the popularity or the success of the Pangako Sa Iyo (original) before it. The popularity of teleserye should be first and foremost attributed to the aggressive marketing and marketing infrastructure that the networks has build up over the years that teleserye shows are being shown in traditional markets and penetrating into new territories. It was the networks marketing strategy and venturing into new territories that is making our artistas known to international viewers. On a parallel development, it so happen that the success of Jadine's Diary ng Pangit also made a good impression on international audiences for their movie and they get all the credit for that. But the success of Lizquen's Forevermore in Central Asia, or teleseryes being shown in new markets like South America is not because of Jadine's Diary ng Pangit lifted up the boat for everybody so to speak. It's the behind-scene marketing and strategies of the networks that made all of this success in teleserye being shown overseas and along with it our artistas being known to international audience that made it all happen for everybody. Sure, Jadine's Diary ng Pangit made a good splash on international audience and they made a name for themselves thanks to their spantaneous success, but Kathniel got to where they are thanks to their own steam or previous success. Lizquen's Forevermore, is fortunate enough to be the first teleserye to be picked up by foreign buyers to be shown in Central Asia and as a bonus it became popular. Same with South America with the first Bridges of Love shown there but the successes in all of these are the result of the networks work and their front loading and marketing of what they think will catch on. It doesn't always become a popular commodity because the popularity or the appeal of a particular teleserye depends on how international audience will respond.
DeleteAdmin here. We're using different definitions of popularity. And we're talking of different phemonena. Binubuhat mo ang bangko ng opisina mo.
DeleteIf you noticed I often use here the words popularity "without propaganda machine nor government intervention" to describe the upsurge of the Pinoy stars initially. This is a popularity that didn't come from the frontloading or machination of any corporate entity, the latter came much later. In previous articles, I described this spontaneous wave of popularity which started in the pirate sites, which led to my discovery of the sabotage done on the Pinoy LT Jadine (read Sabotage #2). The really big upsurge of their popularity came from the pirate sites, away from the influence of the major stations (the Phil companies are supposed to be strict then, I don't know now because there are already many Philippine seryes & films in the pirate sites). The pirate sites from Latin Anerica to Russia to Asia (which I suspect are handled by a single entity which works for the Korean promos, with a few other Asian works as decor to make it look legit as an Asian promo site). The later popularity of the teleseryes of the Big 3 Lt's dovetailed to the initial upsurge from the social media which fed the pirate sites. That's where the corporates came in but the field has already been plowed for them by the pirate-social media axis.
Yes, I understand what you are describing about the Jadine's spontaneous phenomena, I don't disagree with what you said in your previous write ups. But I want to make it clear also that Kathniel's popularity stem from their own steam and the successes of their own shows inside and outside the country. It might have help that when the Jadine was riding high from their spontaneous appeal from international audience by way of various websites and social media, people from other nationality got curious for other pinoy artistas and they found out other love teams. Other love teams might have benefited from that, but with or without that curiosity for other pinoy artistas stemming from Jadine's Diary ng Pangit, Kathniel didn't need any of those to be where they are today since kathniel are already doing fine and becoming more popular thanks to successes of their own "phenomena". ABS-CBN is always try to market those local hit shows they think it has a good chance of being bought by foreign buyers and they always recommend and frontload the ones they think it might also become a hit in other countries. THis has worked for LizQUen's Forevermore in Central Asia but it doesn't always work for others. It just depends on the audience. I can say Forevermore in Central Asia and Bridges of Love in South America benefited from the hard work of the networks to diligently sell their product abroad. This has always been the case.
DeleteStupid. People seem to be wrongly thinking that the success of a particular teleserye outside the country is determined by the LT starring in the teleserye is a wrong conclusion. It's not the LT that make or break a teleserye's success or popularity outside the PH, it is the actual teleserye itself that determined that. It doesn't matter if a teleserye has the most popular LT starring in it if people from other country find the show to be not interesting. GMA shows being shown in other countries has proven that to be correct way of interpreting what's happening because GMA shows success or popularity is not pinned on whether they have a popular LT in a particular teleserye or not. The particular show itself is the one that make or break a teleserye outside the country. Not who is starring in it. That's the way it goes.
ReplyDeleteWell it seems you think of anybody beside yourself as stupid. But I might call you stupid too because you are changing the issue. The issue here are the popular LT's, their popularity, not the teleserye, which is another issue. You are just stating the obvious. Just refer to the historical background provided above so you can place where your stupidity comes from
DeleteI'm referring to people who thinks that the success of a teleserye overseas is based or is determined by the LT's starring in the teleserye.
DeleteLT = sure hit overseas. Clearly, that is a wrong conclusion.
Admin again here, I was waiting for a response but it seems everybody is waiting for my response too.
DeleteNowhere was it said that the teleserye is based on an LT. TIMY failed to generate the usual response to a Jadine telesrye as discussed in the commentaries in the blog. BUt TIMY doesn't remove the fact that Jadine, like the other 2 Big 3 LT', achieved a level of popularity that a Pinoy should be proud of. It would be nice if that level of popularity would be maintained, or even surpassed. What we are discussing here are the "not artistahin looking" new loveteams which we fear won't generate the popularity of the Big 3 LT's. They can do all the best teleserye but I fear, like many others, that most will not bother with them much. I certainly find them disgusting. Which means we would blow an opportunity to grow the new-found interest on Pinoy young artists
I think mga taga-Abs itong ilan dito & it gives us a window sa mentality nila. Their self-justification. Na kesyo the teleserye will succeed maski panget ang bida dahil sa story. That's pretty obvious, pero it's not the end of the story. You have to take into the equation kung gaano rin kapanget kasi there's a pain threshold to watching ugly people after all. Look at the Koreans, their propaganda machines are chanting hallelujah to their dramas but we actually confirmed they were languishing in the bottom of rating charts, say in Peru & Indonesia & almost everywhere except the Mongoloid areas in East Asia, they couldn't even hoodwink the Mongoloid minorities in Central Asia though there are many Korean settlers there. If they had good stories, why nobody wanted to watch them in those areas where they got stuck in the bottom of the charts? As for the Pinoys, isn't it foolhardy to gamble with somebody below the standards when you already successfully proven your current standards had what it takes to conquer vast set of disparate markets? Frankly, I think katangahan
Delete@Admin March 27, 2017 at 8:36 PM
DeleteA lot of teleserye are base on LT or the teleserye is based around LT or is about Kilig. I don't have any disagreement with the LTs popularity outside the PH, but how they made it to attained that popularity is a diff story. Again, you people are being too preoccupied with new loveteams or how they will fare with their looks compared to the 3 most popular LT that you people are actually writing off these incomming LT before they actually proven themselves. And worst, you people are conditioning people and prejudicing people to dislike them. Not a very good way to promote your own, I would say.
@March 28, 2017 at 4:30 AM
DeletePeople in here are just too preoccupied with looks that you people are starting to tear your own apart. Sure the look-factor play an important role, and nobody said it isn't important. But again, no matter if a show has the best looking people starring in it, or if a show has the most popular LT out there, no one is going to watch it if it's boring show. Nobody said that the teleserye will succed maski panget ang bida dahil sa story. Ikaw lang nagsasabi niyan. I think you are putting too much faith and letting yourself conditioned by what the admin and commenters writes regarding Mongoloid and East Asians.
By teleserye, I mean the whole package, which include good story, the good looks of the artistas, the acting, the way it was directed and shot, score, the charisma or the appeal of the show that gets the viewers emotionally involved, cinematography, not boring, etc. etc. If you can hit it with at least some of these of with the audience you are good to go and sometimes when the planets all lined up, you got a hit with the audience.
DeleteThe hot stars, stupid. People will not identify with the hit teleserye (though they are impirtant) but people will identify with hot Pinoy stars! Hot Pinoy young stars are the man! hahaha
Delete@12:20 AM You're focusing way too much on "hotness" since historically, Filipino teleserye are not being sold on the backs of having a "hotness" artista starring in it. That only comes as bonus effect. Besides, the Jadine phenomena was from a movie not teleserye. Sure having a hotness in the teleserye plays an important role overall and we can even exploit that, but it's not the only game in town. Don't loose your sight on creating good teleserye with good actors and all that, over focusing too much on "hotness" like how the music industry is on PH: Hotness over talent.
DeleteThe greatest enemy in promoting our own teleseryes/movies/artistas or filipino content ay ang sarili natin, dahil tayo mismo ang mang-da down at mang tear apart ang mga content natin. This is true and you can observe this happening.
This is always true.
Now there is something very wrong with this picture.
You can look but don't touch. You can read but don't post.
In fact, nakaka harm yan sa promotion ng ating mga content be it ABS or GMA.
Talk to them nicely if you want to correct them. You won't win any love for out content sa mga ibang lahi kung kakalabanin nyo sila.
etc.
etc.
Nice points but let's not get used to cursing pls
AWOOOOO!
DeleteMga bagong horror stars.
Why complicate the odds?
DeleteMadrama kasi ang mga ilang Pilipino.Isusyut na lang, bablankahin pa ang sarili
DeleteTiganan nyo nalang itong page na to, karamihan ay mas prefer ang filipino shows https://www.facebook.com/StarTimesNovelaE1/photos/a.538910196290398.1073741827.538863179628433/715100965337986/?type=3&theater
ReplyDeleteTsk tsk these are the good times. Wait for the coming Pinoy LT horror show
The same thing will happen to McLisse, MayWard, BaiLona etc. In the end people are looking for that X factor na meron ang KathNiel at LizQuen.
Perfect example jan ang My Bebe Love. The story and the film itself is a VERY BIG CRAP.
Perfect example is That Thing Called Tadhana. Yes Angelica was there but her partner was not really a big movie star.
Even Marian, Jericho and Kristine.
Bottomline here is, kailangang i level up pa ng dalawang networks ang teleserye nila. Rhodora X, Cautiva, Second Chances, My Husbands Lover, Amaya to name a few.
Sampalan kidnapan patayan barilan. Paulit ulit. Talagang naisalba sila ng Big 3 internationally.
4:47, Admin again. Nice insight. I just would like to clear something lest some might get the impression I'm not particular about the story. I am but it's also true that lots of times I walked out of a movie because I didn't like the faces of the performers. I just would like to make clear that my interest on the Big 3 popularity is almost anthropological- nagulat ako, so to speak, so I followed them up. So Pinoys could create that kind of "interest" after all! Well, why not make it our brand? More, not less. There was an emotional component to it because I ended up writing a blog
DeleteHi Admin, 4:47 here. I love your blog to be honest. I am educated so much of how Pinoy Showbiz goes.
ReplyDeleteWe all argue of what is and what is not. Pero ang main talaga here is to improve talaga ang seryes naten. Be it kapamilya or kapuso or even kapatid
Mayroon din namang teleserye na sumikat ay dahil lamang sa maganda at gwapo yung mga bida, ang example dyan ay yung Be careful with my heart, pangkaraniwan lang ang pag-mumukha nila Jodi at Richard, pero sumikat parin sila dahil maganda yung kwento ng palabas nila.
ReplyDeleteBut they are very good actors, they may not be the best looking but they are not ugly too. By Asian standard Richard and Jodi look better than average people.
DeleteI think the success of a teleserye depends on the story, good looking and talented actors and what I mean by talented here is good acting. Good looks alone can't make them. A teleserye with a good story needs good actors that will give life to the characters, actors that will touch the hearts of the viewers. And that good acting is what lacking in these new wannabes loveteams.
ReplyDeleteFlips are really hot abt their love teams LOL
ReplyDeleteDepends, if the LT looks good, definitely yes
DeleteNapansim yo ba doon sa VK, naka-million views na yung Just the way you are, means gustung-gusto nila talaga yung school themed drama, sana ganun ang gawin nila sa susunod na teleserye nila.
ReplyDeleteOo nga, pinamature nila agad sa Everyday I love You kaya hayan di siya kasinlakas ng JTWYA sa mga foreign fans
DeleteHahaha The Koreans failed again in their dark strategy, they are still eating dust in the bottom of the Peruvian ratings: when Bridges of Love/Puentes de amor became a hit in the 5:30 slot, they grabbed the slot & showed Mundos opuestos which inherited the ratings of Puentes to become the highest rating kdrama though still very low compared to the other telenovelas showing then. But they soon returned to the bottom of the ratings as always and when Pangako sa yo/La Promesa scored higher again than the kdramas, thry grabbed again its slot & for a while, the kdrama which succeeded it, Amor secreto, inherited the ratings of La Promesa...but...but it immediately dived & only had 1 point rating now. Hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThe Koreans historically rate only 1-2 points & they have been stuck at the bottom of the Peruvian charts for 15 years... but for "mysterious reasons", they still get shown despite being the lowest-rating telenovelas below the other telenovelas from Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey & the Philippines.
The Pinoy teleserye, Cautiva, at 4:30 pm meanwhile is flying at 4.6 points.
Corruption can also get you shown maski ayaw sa yo. Pakapalan lang ang mga Koreano
DeleteI think Peruvians prefer Philippine telenovelas because of relatability. They can relate more to our culture, our mindset that is part of the show.
DeleteThe Turkish are hot in Peru though they are Muslims. But they are beautiful. Just like Pinoys.
DeleteBut unlike the Koreans. The bad Korean looks are the biggest burden of the Koreans, nobody wants to watch their faces, that's why they kept on sabotaging the Pinoys because they can't push their delusion of being the stars of Asia outside East Asia
DeleteYeah, the Koreans are hilarious, but they have no shame
That means more sabotage are expected from the Koreans.
DeleteThe sabotage has already started.
DeleteSabotage galore coming soon
