BIRDSHOT & SALVAGE: Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Weekend Tales

I devoted the weekend in watching 2 films included in the ongoing Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. I based my choice on the supposed quality of the films. Last Saturday, I watched the first, Mikhail Red's Birdshot, because I remembered reading not too long ago that it received a best Picture award somewhere (it turned out to be the Best Film of the Asian Future competition of the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival). On Sunday, the second, because of the supposed reputation of its director, Sherad Anthony Sanchez, whose films I still have to see. I love experimental films, I endured Raya Martin's Autohystoria (& that's a mean feat to anybody's book) but though I liked Birdshot, I lost patience with the second one midway & left the 6 people who shared the cold cinema with me.

Birdshot's quiet laconic pace bored me for a while but the surprising texture of a rural Philippine film noir gripped me eventually. Salvage had no hook whatsoever to make me glued to my seat. Frankly, it turned me off so much I decided it was not really worth waiting for the supposed "surprising" climax. I was simply not interested anymore.

After my experience with Salvage, I don't know if I will still risk watching any of the other entries. I might eventually but I'm still sweet-talking myself.

COMEDIAN OF THE YEAR WAS NOT AN ACTOR: Will Eugene Domingo be suitable to play Leila de Lima in a ANG BABAE SA SEPTIC TANK Sequel?

So, next month, January 2017, our blog will be 2 years old. Who would have thought what started as a prank would last that long? Anyway, we like to believe we have found our niche. I still have to find more time to devote to the blog though- but hopefully we'll be more consistent and do it on a larger-scale in the coming new year.

2016 was highly entertaining, but showbiz was trumped by the political comedian named Leila de Lima who gave us the laughs the most. Self-uprighteousness pretensions were never as laughable. She is expected to entertain us more in 2017 as she hilariously tried to enlarge her stand-up comedy act in the international comedy stores. Nice to know 2017 will be as rib-tickling as this year.

Eugene Domingo might not be appropriate to interpret De Lima on the screen anymore. Eugene just got an Italian boyfriend, she might be too classy to many to play the sugar mommy of a provincial driver-bodyguard.

I liked the first version of Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. I'll surely watch the second one.

MOVIE TRAILERS: "MULAT" / "APOCALYPSE CHILD"

Currently showing are two Pinoy Indie films which earned accolades in the international film festival circuit. It's always wise to balance our knack to celebrate the popular (AKA commercial) successes of  Pinoy films with our appreciation of the more "intellectual" side of the industry.
Great films.

"BARCELONA A Love Untold": Trailer with Vietnamese Subtitles

The latest film of the Kathniel loveteam composed of Kathryn Bernardo & Daniel Padilla is a certified blockbuster hit, reportedly earning PHP 130 million in its first 5 days. It has already started its international run in many countries, though there are still no reports that the film will be shown in Vietnam. Last year, Kathniel won the Foreign Stars of the Year Award in Vietnam, and their Vietnamese fans are actually very active in the social media. In fact, proof of their eagerness, these Kathniel fans have already subtitled all on their own the trailer of the movie.

I'm still on sick leave but I don't want to disappoint a Kazakh fan who alerted me on this great news.

The teleserye DOLCE AMORE is currently being shown on 31Kanal Kazakhstan to great raves but the popularity of the Pinoy loveteam Lizquen composed of Enrique Gil & Liza Soberano means the fans craved for more. So they just got to show the first hit movie of the hit loveteam, Just The Way You Are.

IGNACIO DE LOYOLA: Filmed in Spain with Spanish Actors, made by Filipinos

The Philippines is touching base with its Hispanic roots. Pinoy super loveteam Kathniel just filmed their recent movie When in Barcelona in ... where else, Barcelona. Pinoy teleseryes & films were being discovered by our long-lost  Spanish-speaking brothers (despite the sabotage done by insecure dark forces who apparently fear that the Hispanics would discover their Asian-Hispanic brothers who looked  not like the Asian version of the dark forces themselves). And now, a Filipino crew filmed a Pinoy Jesuit production about the Spanish Marano who founded the Jesuit order, using Spanish actors led by Andreas Muñoz.
