The Vindication of Julia Barreto

After a few fits and starts, has the moment of Julia Barreto finally  arrived?

Reports say her MMFF 2016 entry Vince and Kath and James topped the overall provincial sales (Die Beautiful topped the Manila area).

To be honest, I wasn't able to watch any of the films in the last Metro Filmfest. I tried two times  but the lines were too long I backed out each time. I'm allergic to long queues. Frankly, I'll just wait for the DVD's.

As for Julia, she definitely has managed to creep back into the game. Good maneuver, I must say. With the upsurge again of ordinary faces among the new wannabe stars, we need all the real beautiful faces to hold our interests.

Teeju? Teelia? Jujay? Jutee?

Teejay Marquez' Indonesian fans are an imaginative lot. Good for them, the Pinoy showbiz blogosphere is easily accessible to them because it is mostly in English. I was scanning the Indonesian online pages when I saw this picture. I was nearly fooled, I actually asked my assistant to research if Teejay Marquez ever did a film with Julia Barreto & Jadine. My assistant got the upper hand this time: didn't I see that the pic was a publicity for the movie Para Sa Hopeless Romantic & Teejay's picture was substituted for someone else?

 Yeah, yeah. Some Indonesian fan thinking Teejay looked better with Julia. They have taste, don't they?

I asked five of my female friends who they think among certain new loveteams will shine in 2016.  Like me, they only got hooked on Pinoy films last year. All are well-educated successful professionals so not the typical showbiz hags, their choices were most likely well-considered more from logical parameters because their mental faculties normally work that way. Actually, I gave them a choice of 10 pairs. Just for variety, I juggled the pairings of the established loveteams on top of the new ones being groomed by the studios.  These were the Top 3, from the top, the Number 3, down to Number 1.

These cute girls are better as actresses than singers but what the heck, they are pretty anyway. They are the next big actresses of Pinoy cinema and that's very reassuring, our future superstars will all be pretty for once. Perfect eyes, perfect faces.

Beauty Is Back in Pinoy Showbiz!!!

Girl screams are loud again in the Philippines, youth films & teleseryes are resurgent, that is because really beautiful young people have returned. In the past, "pangmasa" was the convenient (though it turned out, ignorant) reason for recruiting ordinary-looking stars, but those years were the years of doldrums & lost interest (I was one of those turned off by the stars then). It is clear the masa doesnt want to be patronized, it was probably insulted that it was judged as having poor taste. Why should she identify with a duck when she wanted to be a peacock? She herself can change her own reality, not outdated social engineers who probably can't even fathom the world beyond their talking points. So the beautiful actors & actresses returned & Pinoy showbiz is bubbling again. Even me, already a professional, has mixed in.

Media can only alter reality so much- in a country obsessed with beauty, you can't switch an ostrich with a pig. Or you can't fawn over a duck when there are peacocks.
