After making history in 2017 as the highest-rating Asian telenovela to be shown in Peru, the GMA teleserye Hanggang Makita Kang Muli will try its magic this year in Africa. It's now on weekend primetime on KTN, Kenya's top-rating free-to-air TV channel.
Last year, GMA new international releases surprisingly overwhelmed ABS-CBN as the latter only managed to sell a single 2017-produced teleserye for the whole year (Magpahanggang-Wakas). Early 2018 proved that the GMA upsurge hasn't waned, new GMA teleseryes keep popping in various locations while its rival can't seem to sell its new releases in the international market: Poor SeƱorita in TV3, Malaysia's largest free-to-air TV, Vietnam had My BFF, Second Chances in Africa & Ecuador, Destiny Rose in Thailand, etc. It's now February & like last year, Abs-Cbn is still mostly relying on its 2016 & earlier hits to be rerun in various locales (As a consolation, the 2015 Kathniel teleserye, Pangako Sa Yo has a chance to shine in Thailand).
It's clear the GMA writers are propelling GMA to greater heights in the international arena: innovative plots, not only internationally acceptable Pinoy good looks & sleek production values, are now flying the flag for teleserye abroad. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN is still in GMA mode, still aping the fantaserye genre started by the latter as GMA upped the ante with stories not usually tackled by teleserye (amazingly, a future GMA teleseye is titled The Cure. Getting cutting edge in medical thrillers? )
Meanwhile, it's safe to say the sudden international prominence of the Big 3 young loveteams of ABS-CBN (Kathniel, Lizquen & Jadine) was a fluke. A tsamba which nobody knew how to handle. Yeah, it was probably serendipity that 3 cute Pinoy LT's were created at the same period that they were noticed in various geographical areas in the world, reaping adulations not normally accorded to previous Pinoy or any Asian loveteams. Proving that physically, the beautiful among the Filipinos will be more readily acceptable in more disparate geographical areas of the world than the usual Asian stereotypes.
But a short look at the history of loveteam making in the Philippines would confirm that cute loveteams coming too far in between was the norm in Philippine, particularly ABS-CBN, loveteam making. The truth is, despite the overabundance of cute youth in Philippine streets, ordinary-looking teen idols were de rigueur in the last 30 years. It doesn't surprise me that my batch never bothered with the so-called Pinoy teen loveteams then (so did the world, obviously), most of my friends looked far better than the stars and worse, I hate to admit it but I didn't know anybody who wasted his time with Pinoy showbiz. A few bad apples could really spoil the whole basket. The looks of certain Pinoy stars could rebuff a big part of the Philippine population. I remembered the time while channel-surfing when I felt revolted watching a reality show because I found the host "cross-eyed", only to find out years later when I was already writing this blog that she was actually a big star in that channel. If not for this blog (thereby realizing Pinoy showbiz was bigger than her eyes), I would have lost respect on Pinoy showbiz forever.
Propaganda assumes that mass media can trick the people into believing or adulating what it dictates. Not a fat chance here in the Philippines. People mostly ignore it when it's tacky. Like we did.
The good thing is that the Big 3 has really proven that unlike the stereotype Asian look, the Pinoy melting-pot look is more acceptable in more geographical areas of the world. And looks matter. This is classically typified by the greater acceptance of the Pinoy teleseryes over the kdramas in all the international areas where they were shown together like in South America (Peru), Southeast Asia( Indonesia), Africa, Central Asia (Kazakhstan), etc.
Perhaps in 2050 when the Philippines is predicted by HSBC to be the 16th richest country in the world, some Filipino strategists would decide to elevate the stature of Filipinos (much like how the South Koreans are doing now in promoting themselves out of the shadows of their giant neighbors, the Chinese & the Japanese). It should occur to them, however, that we don't have to mix delusion into the effort just like how the South Koreans have done it. The Koreans are not only aping the Japanese Jpop for its Kpop or the Chinese for their F4, but in a ludicrous effort to gain anchor into the Spanish-speaking world, their propagandists went hilariously overboard & had the weird temerity to hilariously tag themselves as "Latinos of Asia", a tag given to the Filipinos by the Latinos themselves. To extremely hilarious results, as expected. As we have documented in the blog, they were perennially clinging for years at the very bottom of the Peruvian rating charts while their propaganda was hilariously proclaiming they were popular. Nobody was fooled. More like nauseated.
No need to go the South Korean comedy route, Pinoys now know we can count on our looks. Perhaps by 2050, we'll have learned how to handle internationally other Big 3's. After all, we have the supply.

What do you expect naman kasi sa mga executive natin? Out of depth na sila pag international na, nangangapa na
ReplyDeleteDi pa sila ready sa big-time
DeleteWhether they admit it or not, may problem sa Abscbn. Obvious ang insecurity nila as proved by their obsession sa GMA.
Yong strategy ng Abs na drain yong kabila, nag-boomerang in point of talent kasi mas solid ang line-up ng GMA ngayon, may itsura at talent ,nawala ang mga kangkong...and pair that up with good stories & writers, it is coming up with really good teleseryes na sure ipipick up sa labas, lalong iiwan ang Abs na nagre-rely na lang sa mga luma
I hope we learn to be united and act as one when promoting our PH content sa mga ibang lahi, be that content belongs to GMA or ABS.

Delete9:43, Wrong. My Channel programming ang JKN Global, sa IPTV at Cabsat. Mostly Indian at Pinoy dramas ang palabas nila as written by 9:35.

DeleteAs stated ni 3:36, mas solid ang line up ng GMA ngayon kasi nawala ang mga di gaano artistahin kaya sa totoo lang gandang-ganda ako sa line up ng GMA ngayon...ang gaganda pati ng mga stories so we should expect that like last year, more GMA teleseryes will be bought abroad
Look at their new teleseryes, ginagastusan na.
Iligtas sina Kath at Dj, baka masapian sila
At least that's the plan or the idea kaya huwag kayo masyado pansinin na luma ipinapalabas... ang importante ay ipinapalabas nila.
Tapos No Me Olvides (Someone to Watch Over Me) naman sa Ecuador this coming Feb 19.
Sana we pressure our teleserye and movie makers to be more creative in creating new songs and OST's for the teleseryes and movies. We need to level up in that department.
ReplyDeleteI agree i-pressure natin na mag-level up tayo in that department. But that doesn't mean di tayo up because we are. Though kelangan pa ng push.
DeleteI noticed you're falling into that old-style knack for making generalizations (like di masyadong magaling gumawa ang Pinoy ng OST, etc.) which Pinoys love to resort to when they're bitten by unfounded inferiority complex. UNFOUNDED because first, teleserye is in a higher level than lakorn; second, Pinoys are competent in laying music to their films; third, there's nothing wrong with revivals, even Hollywood blockbusters resort to using revivals; fourth, I've seen a lot of Thai films & believe me, not all songs are perfect fit, etc.
But having said those, I would say some, not all, Pinoy productions are lazy. We have had good songs come out of movie OST's but it seems some producers don't try hard in this department: there are good local songs there if they only look. Ngayon na lang naman nagkukulang but during the Golden Age of Pinoy films from the 70's to 90's, a lot of great songs came out from films, not to mention the OPM songs from that period.
It's not how you lay down the music everybody can do that. What kind of quality you lay down in music is what's important. Dapat huwag mag defensive at magreact kaagad at sasabihin, we are better than them. Maling ugali yan. We pat our back too much kaya sometimes we don't even bother pressuring the powers that be to innovate and be more creative. Pero just as there is inferiority complex problem, there is also the problem of "we are better than them" problem. Kaya wala nang nagiinovate sometime at na stuck na lang sa more of the same dahil nga sa "we are better than them" attitude Nagrerevival nga ang Hollywood pero kumpara sa pilipinas you can't compare the creativity of hollywood sa pilipinas. Hollywood can afford to do some revival but Philippines' life blood in the industry seems to be more of the same, more of doing revival which as you say is lazy and a damper to creativity and innovation. Why you always looking in the past. If we can't admit may kakulangan tayo sa present status qou para naman mamotivate at machange ang status quo di wala lang mangyayari kung ayaw natin admit meron kakulangan talaga para magimprove. Kaya nga ako nagsusulat ng ganitong topic para ma ipush at ma pressure ang mga tao at mag snowball effect kung sakaling marating ang message sa mga tao that can do something about it. Walang mangyayari kung ang sagut sa message ay, we are better than anyone else no point in improving and innovating kung ganyan lang. That is no good.
Just some comments:
DeleteFirst, sometimes you have to look at the past to know what you are capable of especially if malakas ang present inferiority complex.
Second, The claim that teleserye is better than lakorn is not an idle claim nor is it a product of "we are better than them" attitude problem. It is a fact easily checked: teleserye has a wider world footprint in the broadcasting world because it is sought after & bought (though lakorn has more footprint in the online pirate world because it is free), more recognition from reputable awarding agencies like Int Emmy, etc.
Third, OST's are not a priority by some local producers. But to those who have OST as priority like Viva, just listen at their soundtracks, for example, it was the OST of "Diary ng Panget" that contributed a big part of its international popularity. So a push to make it a priority is in order.
Fourth, the big number of hits of mv's from Thailand or even Vietnam is a sign of the health of their music industry, interested ang mga tao nila sa products nila. Our music industry is at a doldrums nowadays with unintetesting acts & just as uninteresting output but this is clearly just a phase, malalagpasan din yan kasi di naman ganyan dati, it's not a reflection of the potential because here the past is important, because if they were capable of incredible output before, why not now? Just a matter of push kasi kung meron noon, nandyan pa, di lang nabubunot.
Kung may stable of writers sila, dapat meron din silang stable of composers.

Delete@3:25 Mahirap ba makaintindi?
Delete(First) Looking at the past is not a problem but it becomes an issue if you are living in the past and won't innovate and move forward.
(Second) Nobody here is making an argument that lakorn is better than teleserye, I can even support that teleserye is indeed better than lakorn. But again, the comparison is very specific. Go back to the top and read again.
(Third) You just provided an explanation on one of the reasons why we need to improve on the OST's department and in music, and making my point for me. On the case of VIVA and Diary ng Panget, the good thing about them is that they listen to the advise, suggestion and feedback from people from comments on their youtube videos, thanks to a lot of people providing input to VIVA.
(Fourth) Healthy at interested ang mga tao nila at ibang nationality, dahil magaling ang creativity nila at magaling mag innovate at mag adopt sa signs of the times, at hindi sila stucked in the past, na ayaw magmove on at contento na lang sa mga usuals gaya ng iba diyan sa atin.
The ills of the present is not a phase, it is in fact the status qou that needs to break, it's been that way for a long time and will stay the same unless something is done about it. If you are banking on the past for a better future then nothing will come of it. Funny you mention the past para alam mo ang kaya mo? Nonsense. You are only making excuses that won't matter much to the present situation. In fact, looking at the past daw according to some people i've come across before is their argument why they do revival and recycled songs. Just another lazy excuse not to make new music or innovate. You do not need all that excuses to make good music. If you are innovative and have the talent and creativity, and knows how to make things work, you can make great music that will not only be a commercial success, but be a popular song not only amongst us but maybe even to other nationality. But again, comparing sa OST's ng lakorn at sa atin, and even to music at large, marami pa tayong malaking kakulangan diyan. Hindi inferiority complex na sabihin yan, and yes we need to push at mag pressure para mataohan ang mga powers that be to do the right thing for the better.
Delete1. Ost at mv (in effect, pop music) ang pinag-uusapan, & their kind. Read the original comment
That's ur opinion.
3.Now if Viva can make it, there's no reason why Abs can't make it if it really decided to focus there. GMA is already doing it
4.When you mention the past, it doesn't mean you are stuck in it. It means that you used your DNA in the past, you are not using it now but your genes are still there, so you can still use it in the future. The potential is not lost. Ergo the present is just a phase

Delete1. Again, ang linaw at very specific usapan dito. back read ka all the way to the top.
2. Tigas ulo mo rin no ayaw pa rin patalo.
3. In other words you are admitting na tama observation ko. GMA is still as bad as ABS.
4. Of course they are stuck in the past, you don't have to look far to see the bad quality of the product. Pa DNA DNA ka pa kita naman ng lahat na may problem talaga pero ayaw parin mag move forward at mag innovate. spout all you want about the past or genes, they will still be stuck doing the usuals and lack luster product unless something is done about it.
Things to ponder. Ang mga movies ng mga Thai ay mas magaling kumpara sa atin, both in quality and in successes overseas and in acceptance but other nationalities. Kaya kayong mga may kapangyarihan na mapaganda ang ating film at tv industry...better work harder to improve our product dahil malapit lang sa atin ang ka competitor natin ready to leave us behind in the dust. Tala na nga nila tayo sa movie department eh at sa ost's at mv....huwag complicent.
DeleteAgain, only your opinions. Let me put things into proper perspectives. While generally, The Thai movie industry has been healthier for a longer time (It released the hits "Shutter" & Ongbak series during the self-inflicted-due-to-ignorance-to-foreign-machinations doldrums of the Pinoy movie industry, long before its recent recovery), it doesn't mean talo tayo sa OST's o sa lakorn. Or even sa quality of our recent movies. Pwede mas nag-excel siya sa variety ng movies (because we mostly excel in romcom & drama movies), and that is where we should focus.
DeleteTrue, the movies of Apichatpong & a few others were well-received in film festivals but after the Thais have made their mark, the Pinoys followed in greater volume afterwards.
It doesn't change the fact we are not behind in OST or even quality of our movies. Still, I agree, we shouldn't be complacent
Masyadong beki dominated ang Pinoy movie industry. Dapat meron din tayong Ongbak. Indonesia nga, may Iko Uwais sila (The Raid).
You can't take the next step of improvement kung ayaw admitin ang kakulangan.
ReplyDeleteThe best way to deal with the propaganda is to make fun if it. The bankrupt Western countries can create trouble but one can't expect much good in terms of support from them anymore so it's actually funny if you think about it
There should be a sanction to local people who are party to the ICC charade. Kagaguhang democracy yan when it's obvious they are working for foreign interests
ReplyDeleteNakakabilib pagkakapal mg mga Koreans no?
Two months pa lang. Wala kc gus2ng magmukhang Korean hahaha
The difference this time, wala namang kumakagat sa regime change gimik ng mga clowns so imbes na sympathy, baka matawa pa.
Parang bagay ah xD
DeletePag Iglesia ni Kristo siguro, INKBS naman. O kaya, MBS, Manalo Broadcasting System
DeleteEl Shaddai kaya, walang planong mag-bid sa Abs pag sakali?
DeleteSana si Quiboloy ang mag-take over.
They should be more forceful
ReplyDeleteIt's time really to deal harshly with these forces of darkness, they destroy our democracy
What I liked was they did it with sense of humor. Either Rappler join the FOCAP (foreign correspondents organization because they are foreign-funded) or they apply as bloggers because they are really bloggers hahaha
DeleteBravo!
They should just ridicule it.
So, iyon pala ang iniisip nilang lusot.
First Rappler. Abscbn next hehehe
Sabagay kelangan ng Abs ng new management. They are degenerating. They need a new direction
Pustahan. Nakakatawa ang Abs, pulos coverage pa ha... Hayun, kagat-labing umaasa.Sigurado namang basted. Quiboloy to the rescue hahaha
DeleteMarami kumikita ngayon, mabuti naman. Biruin mo, pati si De Lima, may nagra-rally.
Yong atin, ewan. Lol
ReplyDeleteKaduet ni BCL si Christian Bautista
https://youtu.be/40dO3o2P2rE
O, hayan, parang aangat na c Morrisette Amon. About time. The deserving ones
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/3-xKMgxVFgo
Hmm, this is exciting. According to Rhett Lawrence, the American record producer of Mariah Carey & Keelly Clarkson, Morisette is the most talented singer in the world right now
Deletehttps://youtu.be/CF3d5qbLSsw
O, bakit silent na rito? Tawa muna tayo.
Good news kung sakali hehehe
Yong plan nya talaga was to establish a monopoly, kaya maski nagkautang-utang, tinangka bangkrapin ang GMA by pirating its talents, hiring its own rating agency which must supposedly proclaim its dominance by getting the impossible 40% ratings (really, was this even possible with our 24 hour economy & very active night life?),etc. Reality never agreed with its contrived narrative. Ang orig plan was to monetize everything- kung gusto mo manuod outside the timeslots bombarded with commercials, you should pay at Iwanttv, etc. Unfortunately, it didn't have all the aces: for one, GMA had better writers & international marketers, etc.
DeleteThis Abscbn monopoly pretension explained why Pinoy showbiz was practically absent during the time when the Asiatic film pirate scene blossomed earlier: Abscbn was adept in preventing its products from being pirated so the Pinoys were nowhere. It could have made use of the chance to popularize Pinoy showbiz internationally as part of an emerging Asian showbiz, but it was above growing a market, it was content in its monopoly delusions: it wanted the money first, & people had to pay first.
Of course, the Pinoy stars were so cute they would be noticed anyway as what happened nang mapansin sina Jadine & the rest.
But Abscbn doesn't know what to do if it can't make money. It had the Ofw's who are homesick anyway so who cares about Pinoy stars getting big internationally if it can't have immediately the money it wanted? For a monopolist, talk about growing a market is cheap because it only believes in the money it could have firsthand.
The current attitude of Abscbn is the biggest obstacle in order that Pinoy showbiz steps up to the next level internationally. Its monopolistic pretenses should be clipped. Fortunately, GMA has been astute enough in resisting ABSCBN, even overwhelming the latter internationally. The failure of Abscbn internationally is a damning proof it's not worthy to have a monopoly. For one, it should reject Kantar & play in a level field just like everyone else.
Deletehttp://www.gmanetwork.com/fullepisodes
Pero either of them, mas may credibility hahaha
DeleteAba, ok din si Thinking Pinoy. Ang galing mag-analyze. Pwedeng-pwede siya
DeleteNaku, may interesado pa ba?...medyo nakakadiri ang Pinoy showbiz ngayon. We must have the ugliest young stars in the world nowadays. From cute to nakakatakyut, kadiri galore hahaha
DeleteAbscbn lang naman ang nakakadiri
DeleteHere's is the new movie of one of the Love Team, Jadine (James Reid and Nadine Lustre). It looks promising. Go check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7UKL4zg5KM
Meet me in St. Gallen, etc. Parang matino rin ito
DeleteTama ka, 3:48. Ang dami ngang nakakadiring young stars ang Abscbn no? True ka dyan, the ugliest young stars in the world talaga. Kadiri fiesta hahaha
ReplyDeleteGawa di tayo ng Big 3 sa ugliest loveteams in the world.
Delete1. Maymay +
2. Kisses +
3. Joshua +
Naku, marami pa, kulang ang 3, ang dami nila hahaha
Noon, "Big 3". Ngayon, "Ugliest 3" lol
Delete"Kadiri 3" xD
DeleteNakakadiri nga no? Grabe, akala ko ako lang nandidiri lol
Delete
